This publication is a joint project between Busara and CGIAR (through the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT) that makes the case for integrating behavioral science and Human-Centered Design (HCD) throughout the digital agricultural innovation lifecycle. Drawing on project experience across Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Central America, the paper argues that successful digital agriculture depends not only on technically sound products, but on designing for the behaviors, contexts, and systems that enable sustained adoption. It calls on funders and practitioners to make behavioral research and HCD core components of agricultural innovation rather than optional add-ons.

Methods
The publication synthesizes lessons from multiple Busara and CGIAR projects across Africa and Central America. It combines behavioral diagnostics with Human-Centered Design methods, including qualitative interviews, ethnographic research, participatory mapping, co-design workshops, behavioral frameworks such as the Voluntary Function Inventory (VFI), and iterative prototyping. Two case studies, on motivating voluntary data contributors and increasing adoption of the chisel plough in Kenya, demonstrate how integrating behavioral science with HCD improves diagnosis, intervention design, and implementation.
