Arize Okafor
Qualitative Research Specialist

In the not-so-distant past, fresh from my undergraduate studies, I always imagined I would end up pursuing a career in Medicine or spend my days playing around with DNA in a research lab somewhere. As they say, life happens while you make plans and I realized the truth: I was more interested in understanding why people make the decisions they do and also motivated by the inequities in outcomes for my citizens of the global south, be it in education or health. I am now interested in research that seeks to investigate the internal, social and community influences to behaviors and interactions with broader systems. My hope is that by understanding these factors, I can contribute to more bespoken interventions and sustainable developmental change.

So far, I have supported research into the application of behavioral science principles for issues in the health, finance and environmental sectors. This includes identifying innovative ways to improve the uptake of maternal health services (BMGF Strengthening Demand for Primary Healthcare Services in Nigeria), supporting the development of market strategies for the DVR in Lesotho (Population Council), co-developed an SBC framework for improving the uptake of vaccinations (GAVI, Solina) and supported the application of Human-Centered Design thinking in the co-design of prototypes to limit food waste (Posner). I have also co-facilitated a number of behavioral science-focused capacity building sessions (UNICEF Ethiopia) and co-designed our own Toolkit

Background: Before joining Busara, I worked at a start-up digital health company managing the day-to-day implementation of a patient navigation program for people with cancer and as a graduate research assistant contributing to proposal development and grant applications for a consortium of researchers. I have a BSc in Biochemistry from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and an MSc in Global Health from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
