Research Specialist

I joined development research straight out of school, driven by the belief that research and data could unlock better lives for people, but a decade later, we’re still grappling with the same stubborn challenges. I often ask myself: is the problem with how we collect data, how we interpret it, or something deeper in our approach, and what would it take to truly shift the way research drives impact?

As someone working in the development sector, I’ve had more than my fair share of experience with the unforeseen risks and challenges that arise when there’s a misalignment between researchers’ objectives and participants’ preferences and expectations, or when researchers do not manage relationships with participants effectively. Much of our work at Busara bridges the worlds of the Global North, where funders are often based, and the Global South, where most research is conducted. We often serve as a broker between these worlds, and I’ve had a front-row seat to how harm can occur when the gaps in understanding between them are not thoughtfully bridged.

In my role at Busara, I hope to help address these gaps. I am responsible for setting the strategic direction for Busara’s agenda on ethical practice and managing relationships with participants. Most of my work involves developing and testing protocols to ensure that our research participants feel respected and treated with dignity.
