Biography
Malhar Acharya
Associate, Social Stability

I am passionate about applying behavioral science to strengthen citizen engagement and social inclusion. I believe that a thorough understanding of human behaviour and the interconnected factors that govern our everyday decisions, both big and small, is crucial in effecting meaningful change. At Busara, my role involves conducting research, capacity-building, and creating resources that support civil society organizations and communities across India, South Africa, and East Africa.

I am experienced in using both qualitative and quantitative research methods to understand behavior, such as those related to child domestic labor in Kenya, female genital mutilation and child marriage in Ethiopia, civic participation across East Africa, or environmental issues in Lesotho. This understanding allows me to generate insights and develop and deliver behavioral interventions, capacity-strengthening initiatives, and accessible guides and toolkits.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College with majors in Honors Psychology and Economics. My Honors thesis examined the role of overconfidence in dietary decision-making among young adults. Additionally, I have interned at Roundtrip Health and Hindustan Pencils, where I researched topics related to non-emergency medical transportation policy and contributed to market research initiatives, respectively.
