Biography
Shalmali Ghaisas
Senior Associate, Education & Labor

I enjoy engaging and working directly with grassroots stakeholders to understand their definitions and interpretations of being empowered.  I am passionate about finding ways to make the system work for all actors, rather than being passive recipients of a ‘beneficiary upliftment’ program.

Currently, as a Senior Associate at Busara, I manage projects across various sectors, including digital agriculture, community-led school feeding programs, natural resource management, and support systems for caregivers, among others. I am a part of the Education and Labor portfolio. Along with my band of stellar colleagues, we conduct co-design workshops with various stakeholders, from school teachers to farmers, and run very cool lab experiments with them as we try to apply behavioral science in small, meaningful ways.

Before Busara, I spent a year researching at the World Inequality Lab on a paper measuring Land Inequality. I also had a chance to work within the Food Security Analysis unit of the FAO, mastering and applying the IPC methods. My real introduction to ‘behavior change’ and understanding of ‘decision-making in a resource-constrained setting’ occurred during my experience as a Youth for India fellow in Madhya Pradesh, where I trained women farmers to process soybeans and start a soymilk microenterprise.

I have a Master’s degree in Development Economics from Université Paris 1 – Panthéon-Sorbonne, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Statistics from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. When I’m not working, I’m trying to figure out dates and financing for my next mountaineering summit, taking ‘ateliers de danse,‘ and mustering the courage to drive and dive (les deux). I also sing (j’essaie).
