Betty Syanda
Associate Engagement Director, Financial Inclusion

In 2025, I transitioned into a new chapter of my professional journey—joining Busara as an Associate Engagement Director to collaborate and contribute to one of the most critical missions of our time: reimagining how financial products, institutions, and ecosystems can work better for underrepresented and underserved communities, especially women and low-income groups. This shift is a natural progression of my 20+ year commitment to transforming financial access across Africa by building institutions, designing inclusive financial strategies, and leading innovative gender-focused development initiatives.

At Busara, I work with a multidisciplinary team to support partners across sectors—private, public, and philanthropic—in asking the right questions and generating practical, human-centered solutions rooted in behavioral science. I contribute to projects focused on testing how financial tools can empower women-led SMEs, strengthen the resilience of vulnerable households, and redefine value in financial services. My work is grounded in an understanding that no single intervention is a silver bullet. Instead, I bring with me a nuanced perspective built over years of working in banking, insurance, and impact-focused consulting, where I have developed business models, restructured institutions, and designed strategies that have shaped over 6,000 women-led enterprises and community financial institutions.

Prior to joining Busara, I served as the Regional Business Development Consultant at Dahabshiil Group, leading strategy for East and Central Africa. There, I brokered strategic partnerships, scaled money remittance services across six countries, and spearheaded digital integration projects with leading Telco’s like Safaricom, Airtel, and MTN. As a Gender Finance Consultant, I advised boards of financial institutions like Amua Limited, Baraka Pesa, and KWFT Bancassurance, helping to pioneer inclusive financial products and long-term strategies for sustainability and scale.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in International Business from USIU-Africa and am pursuing a Master’s in Metaphysical Humanistic Science. I serve as a coach and board leader committed to women’s empowerment and institutional transformation in the region. Whether leading product innovation or mentoring the next generation of leaders, I remain passionate about designing systems that not only include—but are built for—the people they intend to serve.
