OVERVIEW
We conducted this research project in partnership with EdTech Hub and Ubongo, an edutainment provider in East Africa. Our aim was to understand the barriers to access and use of EdTech among girls aged 7-14 in low-income settings in Kenya. The study focused on caregivers as gatekeepers to EdTech resources and sought to identify scalable interventions that could enhance girls’ access to and utilization of EdTech.
Our findings show the importance of raising awareness about accessible EdTech resources, aligning EdTech content with the national curriculum, providing guidance from trusted professionals like teachers, improving caregiver digital literacy, and tailoring campaigns and interventions to account for gender differences in opportunities, behavior, and engagement with EdTech.
Further research is recommended to establish causal links and evaluate the impact of EdTech on norms and learning outcomes, particularly for girls. These insights have significant policy implications for the Kenyan government in promoting equitable and effective remote learning resources and interventions.
