Biography
At Busara, my current work is centered on reimagining insurance for underserved communities through behavioral science and risk modelling. I am at the center of the design of a Mutual for women’s savings groups, where I combine research, co-design, and actuarial product development to create insurance solutions that reflect the realities of group-based risk sharing.
I am also contributing to the EMBE project, which explores how to optimize agent performance for last-mile insurance distribution within agribusinesses. This includes testing approaches such as agent screening, training, and performance incentives, with insights feeding into the development of an agent platform. I am also testing innovative insurance education approaches, including lab-in-the-field methods and eye-tracking technology, to assess how people engage with and understand insurance materials.
Beyond product and distribution design, I co-lead a Community of Practice on Inclusive Insurance with the Microinsurance Network, focused on leveraging behavioral science to address barriers to uptake. Finally, I am contributing to a forthcoming book with Busara’s FArM and Risk management teams, authoring chapters on indigenous knowledge and informal risk management, as well as community stewardship in climate change and sustainability agendas.
I am a Certified Actuarial Analyst, a Certified Microinsurance Expert, and a Certified Sustainability and Climate Risk Specialist. Over the past 7+ years, I have designed and deployed parametric agricultural insurance solutions for smallholder farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia, alongside developing large-scale financial education campaigns for underserved populations.
Some of my highlights include:
- Designing and deploying parametric agricultural insurance for smallholder farmers across multiple markets (Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, Sudan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Myanmar)
- Leading product design in Sudan, where we reached 12,000 farmers with weather index insurance and over 40,000 farmers with financial education.
- Spearheading public-private partnerships in Rwanda under the ILO’s Social Finance Programme to advance inclusive insurance—building and strengthening collaborations with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Rwanda Tea Federation, and farmer cooperatives. I also led the design of parametric tea insurance product, capacity building of team members and directed the development and rollout of financial education initiatives that reached over 1,200 farmers across three crop value chains.
My expertise lies in blending actuarial modelling and product design with behavioral science and participatory methods. I am especially motivated by understanding how people make decisions about risk and resilience, and by applying those insights to close the protection gap. My goal is to help shape the future of inclusive insurance by positioning behavioral science as a core pathway for innovation.
